We are social creatures who learn by social cues and repeated interactions. As a result, experiential learning is challenging to scale to an online environment, even when done methodically and deliberately. In the field of learning experience design, we strive to optimize these limited virtual interactions to enable students to effectively identify patterns in their environment that lead to favorable learning outcomes. This spring we had 48 hours to create that model for a vast majority of faculty who had little to no exposure to online teaching. This summer, we had (a little) time to catch our breath and came up with a highly effective workshop plan, to train 150+ teaching faculty and their course assistants on how best to deploy a number of experiential tools to their remote classes.
