The Humanizing Online STEM Academy: Fostering Inclusion and Equity through Faculty Development

Despite successful efforts to increase Black and Latinx students entering STEM majors, they are still far more likely to switch out of STEM than their White and Asian peers. Research suggests that increasing kindness and affirmation cues in STEM courses improves the retention of minoritized students. We will introduce the Humanizing Online STEM Academy, a grant project funded by the California Education Learning Lab, aimed at eliminating equity gaps in undergraduate online STEM courses by scaling a 6-week online faculty development program across CA public higher education. Faculty and faculty developers will explore and apply eight humanized elements with culturally responsive teaching pedagogy aimed at shifting the culture in STEM.
