Online proctoring is used in high stakes exams, yet it is not always equitable. Further, many faculty come to rely on online proctoring for day-to-day exams and assessments. But if the goal is to help students achieve course learning outcomes, does that invite the possibility of a variety of ways to achieve that goal? Online proctoring is designed to prevent cheating, yet good course and assessment design can inhibit cheating while simultaneously helping students achieve the learning outcomes of a course. In order to increase capacity for alternative assessments, we will discuss the role of the institution, of technology, and of faculty in student learning, and various ways in which we can leverage non-proctoring technology to hold students accountable for learning outcomes.
